Marco Stella is a dramatic baritone of Italian descent. He was born in Stockholm and educated at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix and the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg.

After graduating in 2000 his first role was Dr Grenvil in La Traviata at Folkoperan in Stockholm, followed by The Father in Hänsel und Gretel at Värmlandsoperan, and Papageno in The Magic Flute, on tour with Jönköpings Sinfonietta. In the year 2001 Marco Stella sang Dr Bartolo in a touring production of The Barber of Seville, conducted by Niels Muus, with performances in Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Germany.  


Between 2002 and 2005 he was a member of the ensemble at Theater Lübeck in Germany, singing such roles as The Father in Hänsel und Gretel, Dr Bartolo in The Barber of Seville, the title role in Gianni Schicchi, Zuniga in Carmen, Truffaldino in Ariadne Auf Naxos and both Angelotti and Sagrestano in Tosca. He has also sung Escamillo in Carmen in Trento, the title role in Eugen Onegin in a concert version in Norway, The Monk in Duke Magnus and the Mermaid conducted by Niklas Wilén (recording with NAXOS in 2000), Wagner in Faust, and Der Kommissar in Der Rosenkavalier.  

His oratorio repertoire includes Puccini's Messa di Gloria and Stainer's The Crucifixion, Bach's St. John's Passion, Haydn's Nelson Mass as well as the requiems of Verdi, Brahms Fauré and Duruflé.  

Marco Stella has worked as a freelance singer since 2005. In 2007 he sang Angelotti in Tosca at The Royal Opera in Stockholm, conducted by Christian Badea, a role he has also sung at the Austin Lyric Opera, conducted by Richard Buckley, and at Opera på Skäret. Marco Stella has guested the Göteborg Opera on several occasions, as well as at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Staatstheater Oldenburg and Teatro Puccini in Merano.  


In April 2009 he made his debut at the Finnish National Opera singing Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. In the summer of 2009, he sang Scarpia in Tosca on tour with Skånska Operan and in October 2009 he sang Don Bartolo in Rossini's Barber of Seville conducted by Pier Giorgio Morandi at the Stockholm Royal Opera.


In June 2010 soloist at the Opera festival gala at Miskolc, Hungary. The 2011-14 season as a soloist at the Gothenburg opera where he sang several roles including The chief of Police in Lady Macbeth from Mzensk, Gubetta in Lucrezia Borgia, the Speaker in the Magic Flute, Pietro in Simone Boccanegra, Ping in Turandot, Belcore in L'elisir D'amore and Scarpia in Tosca. In June of 2013, Marco made his debut as Rigoletto in Cleveland, Ohio. 

 

Further for the 2014-15 season at Gothenburg Opera Marco sang the first Shepard in Strauss' Daphne, the Father in Hänsel and Gretel and also covering the Count in Le Nozze di Figaro. During the 2017-2019 season at the Gothenburg Opera Marco did several permances as the Phantom in A.Lloyd-Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

2020-2021 Covid-19, which resulted a total suspension of all performances and contracts.

2022 Marco sang at the Marstrandsoperan première operagala at Marstrand in July and then later in September made his debut in the role of Renato in G.Verdi´s “Un ballo in maschera” at Pozzulo del Friuli , Italy.

Marco has studied with Dale Funding, his voice-teacher and coach since 2004.
